The first that we see of Laharl is him being woken by his vassal, Etna, and being informed that his father died two years earlier when he took his nap. Upon learning that after his father's death and while he was still asleep other demons were trying to become Overlord, Laharl was happy to put any who opposed him in his place. After a quick refresher in combat, he and Etna went to Vyers' Castle where they looted the place and defeated Vyers after Laharl renamed him Mid-Boss. As Etna promptly ran at the end in the face of manual labor, Laharl decided that her vassals, the prinnies, were his and made them do all the work carrying his spoils.

A little while later, an assassin slipped into his room and he found her talking to herself. When she suddenly left, he called Etna and they tracked her down. As they persued her, they learned that she was an angel. This didn't stop him at all in wanting to make her pay for trying to assassinate him, but after they defeated her dragon she introduced herself as Flonne and it was revealed that she'd been looking to assassinate his father. Laharl was baffled when she showed remorse for the sadness that she assumed he must have been feeling over his father's death, noting to himself that she sounded just like his mother before loudly declaring that as a demon he didn't feel love or sadness and that he didn't need them. This prompted Flonne to decide to stay in the Netherworld and try to learn the true nature of demons, and if necessary to assassinate Laharl if she deemed him a threat to Celestia. He was only to happy to let her stay and show her the true nature of demons.

When the prinnies' payday rolled around, Etna convinced him to pay them as her master and the master of her vassals. He was unwilling to use his allowance for this, so they went to raid a rich demon's house instead. The rich demon in question turned out to be his dad's old butler, and Laharl had no problem taking him out and claiming his fortune, but after the fight Hoggmeiser's son and Flonne stopped him from killing him outright. Flonne accused him of being afraid of love, and Laharl thought back to a time his father tried to tell him something. In the end he decided it wasn't worth killing Hoggmeiser, much to Etna's amazement, and he even left a little of the loot behind which led to Hoggmeiser joining them uninvited.

Overnight, a magic pendant that allowed Flonne to stay in the Netherworld was stolen. Laharl had no intention of getting it back for her, but she promised him "something good" that he apparently couldn't just take from her by force as a reward. They tracked the pendant, but the only clue they found at first was the feather of a powerful angel. They later happened upon Vyers, who had just found it, but was unwilling to give it back. He was also itching for a rematch with Laharl, so they beat him up again. When the pendant nearly fell into magma, Laharl caught it and was pleased to see that it punished him by burning his hand for his wicked heart...but that pleasure was ruined when the "something good" was the chance to realize he had kindness in his heart, leadig to him literally flying off while feeling like a fool.

Later, Laharl overheard Etna and Flonne laughing about something elsewhere in the castle and went to see what was up. He found them amused by an embarrassing photo of him that had a challenge issued to him on the back. Someone wanted him to go to Jotunheim for this or more of the photo would be spread all over the Netherworld. Enraged that someone would use blackmail like this while claim to want a fair fight, and because he'd be ruined if more of that photo got out, Laharl went there immediately to beat the one responsible. But they were soon attacked by demons who weakened Laharl with positive sayings because they were actually painful to him. As they progressed, these demons were replaced by sexy female demons, another of his weaknesses. A demon called Madaras also revealed himseelf as the mastermind behind this, and outed Etna as a traitor who helped him because he had an important memory of hers. He left them for dead, but they caught up to them. He was ready with sexy demons that had positive sayings for Laharl though, and it was only Vyers' timely arrival and advice that saved him. Etna revealed she'd been waiting for the chance to get back at Madaras and defeated him, and in his fear of her he became her servant. Laharl didn't let go of the fact that she'd poisoned him two years before, or her current betrayal and use of him as bait, but he respected the ambitious and crafty side of her and decided she would be his right-hand demon.

Deciding to take out all the competition at once, Laharl wrote a letter issuing a challenge to all those trying to become Overlord. He would take the deed to Overlordship and make his way to the Heart of Darkness, only giving it up if someone defeated him, but claiming it if he got there. There was no deed, but he fought all takers, including the prinnies. He met his match when an Overlord from an alternate Netherworld challenged him, but vassals who were still loyal to his father...and had also been trying for Overlord, came to help him. At the Heart of Darkness, Vyers appeared again, but he was beaten and Laharl became Overlord.

The first task brought to Laharl's attention by Etna was to help a young demon find all of his escaped pet zombies. This wasn't something he cared about, so Laharl refused until Etna made it clear she would never consider him Overlord if he didn't. He relented, and while the work was tedious due to all but one being more annoying than challenging, he received the boy's loyalty and gratitude in return...as well as a temporary passing grade from Etna.

One morning, Laharl learned from Etna that some of the prinnies were missing. They both assumed they had run away. Flonne was acting strangely and a red prinny serving under him tried to ease any worry he had, but he was more concerned about how runaway vassals would affect his image and went to bring them back. Flonne tried to make him be more considerate about his actions toward her and others, but this only made him angry and he abandoned her to search alone. Eventually they found the prinnies about to be reincarnated and he fought Death because he wasn't about to give up his servants. The red prinny made him realize that if he valued them he had to let them go, and he finally relented. This was what she'd been waiting for because she left as well, but not before Flonne's questions and ideals brought to light that the red prinny was his mother. Afterward, Laharl returned to the castle with just Etna and Flonne.

The prinnies reported an anomaly in Stellar Graveyard and at the idea that someone might be hurt there, Flonne insisted they go look into it. They found a human woman named Jennifer and a robot named Thursday wandering around. They had come to the Netherworld with a hero named Gordon to stop the Overlord from invading the Earth. Despite having no interest in Earth, Laharl helped them find Gordon so he could fight them, stating he wouldn't invade Earth if Gordon won but that all three of them would be his vassals if Gordon lost. Gordon lost.

Laharl was enjoying working Gordon into the ground and teasing him whenever he seemed to be planning anything, but was invited on a picnic with the girls and Thursday. Deciding he couldn't let the girls go alone, he went along with Gordon. Their lunch was stolen by Vyers, and as they all searched for him a lot was revealed about Gordon, Jennifer, and Thursday. Vyers ate their food before they defeated him, but Laharl decided to promote Gordon and make use of their abilities in his rule.

Laharl received a written challenge from someone claiming to be Defender of Earth and went to face him in the Forest of the Dead. There they were attacked by the soul of the first Defender of Earth who hadn't passed on peacefully while being unable to fulfill his duty. Thursday was damaged protecting Gordon, but continued on with them rather than being useless. Flonne also tried to make Laharl agree to lose on purpose to let the old man pass on. Laharl didn't and while Flonne was upset with him enough to start to say something less than angelic to him, the fight itself was enough to do the trick. The old man fixed Thursday and thanked Laharl for facing him before passing on. Flonne apologized as well, but everyone was curious what she'd been about to say. Thursday figured it out, but she attacked him first, leaving them all in the dark.

When an earthquake shook the Netherworld, Laharl was excited because it could only mean something big was coming. The Earth Defense Force was invading through the Stellar Graveyard, though at first Gordon foolishly believed them to have come to save him. When Kurtis, Gordon's rival, appeared to them, Laharl wasn't that interested at first. But when he showed the skill to get fairly close before he noticed, Laharl became interested in fighting him. Kurtis however held back as he needed to take Jennifer to her father, challenging them to find him there before flying away with her. Because Jennifer left coordinates to the battleship in Thursday, they were able to get on board, but not before Laharl destroyed most of the two million ship fleet...without killing any humans. They were forced to listen through Kurtis' backstory and his reconciliation with Gordon, and when he sacrificed his life to save Jennifer, Laharl recognized him as a true hero and ordered Death to take his soul to his family as part of his duty as Overlord. The commander, Carter, escaped after they all defeated the angels that arrived to protect him, but the invasion was stopped. Flonne decided that she needed to go back to Celestia to learn what was going on.

Once it was clear that Flonne was determined to go, they all went with her to Celestia. There they were tested by Vyers, it was revealed that an archangel named Vulcanus had branded Flonne a traitor, they fought many angels, and learned that Vulcanus planned to make himself a god to force peace on the universe. They pursed him all the way to the Seraph that Flonne admired, who believed her over Vulcanus because she had taken time to learn about humans and demons rather than be ignorant and prejudiced. Vulcanus was punished by being made a flower, but Flonne was also to be punished for harming angels. Laharl refused to accept this and tried desperately to convince her to just come back to the Netherworld, but she only gave him her pendant...which didn't burn him this time, and expressed gratitude for meeting them all. Once her punishment had been delivered, Laharl became when the Seraph asked if he despised him,
